Patterns shape and give meaning to the world around us, helping to create order and symmetry. They are designs composed of repeated visual elements that give a sense of rhythm, harmony, and movement in a composition. These ‘regular’ arrangements have been used in art for millennia, often communicating a cultural or symbolic meaning.
Recognizing patterns and repetitions gives a sense of order and control, intrigue, and curiosity. Predictability makes humans feel secure because our brain instinctively seeks order, predicts repetitions, and recognizes patterns.
Patterns describe essential relationships among systems’ elements and serve as powerful tools for handling and organizing complexity. Repeating the same unit over and over again creates new understandings and interpretations for both the artist and the viewer.
We invite submitting artists to investigate how the repetition of units can create new understandings and interpretations by emphasizing structure and rhythm while uncovering emerging relationships and revealing deeper meanings.
