A workshop with Regan Rasmussen, Visual Artist / Educator, Saturday, 21 September 2024 (Noon – 4 pm) DIY Room/ MACCA (4495 Happy Valley Road)

In this workshop, artists, poets and writers are invited to playfully engage in ideas associated with palimpsest, looking for traces of history in their artwork. After viewing diverse approaches to the theme, participants will create mixed media work informed by fragments of texts, photos, musical scores, textiles, and maps and using a variety of demonstrated techniques such as mark making, erasure, folding, stamping and stitching to create a richly layered visual narrative.
Materials Provided at Workshop
Assorted papers (drawing, watercolour, tissue, architectural plans), novels (for text manipulation/blackout poetry), photocopies of music, vine & block charcoal, water containers, some brushes & palettes (also lids from yogurt containers that can suffice), letter & number stencils, oil & chalk pastels

Participants Should Bring
- Items that inspire or hold personal meaning for use as departure points, such as text excerpts from books, journals, drawings, paintings, maps, charts, textile remnants, pattern tissue, yarn, found objects for those wishing to create 3D iterations such as small boxes, lamp shades, etc.

- black fine-tip marker
- water based colour markers
- brushes and palette
- inexpensive water-based paint, such as tempera: primary colours and black and white from Opus
- OPTIONAL: favourite drawing/writing materials that may not be provided, such as journals, special pencils, pens, paint sets/ brushes, fabric, yarn darning needles for those who like to work with textiles & found objects for those who wish to work in 3D such as boxes, tins, wood, lampshades etc.
