Slow Portrait Mapping, March 22, 2025

Explore a variety of media while experiencing how deep listening, meditative drawing, and slow painting can result in a unique mind map illustrating you and your inner landscape. Join Deb Gloeckler for an afternoon of quietude, inner reflection and creative fun. Participants to bring some materials from home. Suitable for all levels, no experience required. The art outcome will be a map-like painting made with watercolour paints, inks, pen and collage on a full-sheet of water media paper.

  • In the first portion, we will prepare papers and let them dry while watching a presentation of contemporary artists whose work relates to themes of stillness, identity and mapping.
  • Tea break.
  • In the second portion, we develop mind maps by responding to a deep listening exercise and self-study exercises involving memory, sensory stimulation, guided meditation and slow painting.
  • For the final portion, we will complete our maps with colour and texture choices, shaping them into unique self-portraits. Sharing and goodbyes.

Supplies: Participants should bring a B&W photocopy of a “self-as-child photograph” and their favourite water media, drawing and cutting supplies including a waterproof pen and coloured pencils. Bring a few art papers destined for the recycle bin, such as offcuts, old work, used tissue paper, coloured paper, or water media/drawing paper. Scraps from textile projects or magazines are also helpful.
