Dare to be Happy. This is the challenge. To choose happiness in a fraught moment in our shared history is not a new idea – but it is a vital one. Simone de Beauvoir wrote of practising happiness as a way to resist apathy. Tracey Emin reminds us that art can be a singular source of joy amid chaos. In the Handmaid’s Tale, Margaret Atwood urges us not to let the darkness in life grind us down. And historian Howard Zinn observes that what we choose to emphasize in history shapes how we live: if we see only the worst, we lose our capacity to act. My work in the Cove Gallery is inspired by this powerful and necessary idea: Dare to be Happy.
